Os microrganismos estão por toda a parte. Bactérias, fungos e leveduras que se estabelecem em qualquer nicho ecológico dependem da presença de determinados microrganismos de sua capacidade de usar qualquer material disponível para dele retirar energia, além da oportunidade de desenvolvimento. Os produtos cosméticos e farmacêuticos usam larga variedade de compostos orgânicos e inorgânicos que fornecem nutrientes para o crescimento microbiológico.
As condições físicas e químicas, inclusive a água, pH, resíduos de produtos, resíduos de agentes de limpeza/sanitização, e temperatura adequada criam nichos ecológicos nos quais podem se desenvolver determinados microrganismos.28 Os recursos dos microrganismos dentro de uma fábrica incluem agua, matérias-primas, terra dos sapatos dos operadores e das rodas das empilhadeiras que entram e saem, microrganismos aéreos, insetos e roedores, além de operadores que entram em contato com a linha de produção (manuseando por exemplo, matérias-primas, tanques, enchedeiras, mangueiras que contatam o produto, embalagens).
