While many studies have been done on the effects of odors on the the human psyche few studies identifiy the mechanism by which the observed effect came about. The author indentifies four mechanism (quasi-pharmacological semantic, placebo and hedonic valence) and warns that failure to indentify the mechanism has far reaching implications with respect to the generalizability of reported findings.
